Prevalence of

English Language Learners in the U.S

  • There are just under 5 million school-aged children enrolled in public schools across the United States who are learning English as a Second Language.  

  • Enrollment has increased greater than 25% since 2000 in schools across the U.S.

  • More than 40 states have experienced growth within the English Language learners population.

  • Only 6 states in the U.S. recorded a decrease of English Language Learners.

  • Currently, we are at about 34,000, based on the info in the State Report Card, September 2021.  This puts English Learners  at about 5% of the total student population.  That percentage is up significantly over the past decade.  English Learners hovered at about 2% of the total student population for quite a while.
